Shin Splints
Shin splints are a common condition characterized by pain along the shin bone (tibia), often caused by inflammation of muscles, tendons, or tissues. They typically affect athletes, particularly runners and dancers, but can occur in anyone who increases their activity level suddenly or has existing injuries.

Types of Shin Splints
- Lateral Shin Splints: Pain on the outer part of the fibula.
- Medial Shin Splints: Pain on the inner side of the tibia.
- Anterior Shin Splints: Pain at the front of the shin, between the fibula and tibia.

Causes
- Overuse or sudden increase in physical activity.
- Running on hard or uneven surfaces.
- Unsupportive footwear.
- Pronation issues (over-rolling of the foot).
Assessment
To confirm shin splints, a full biomechanical assessment is recommended. This may include:
- Diagnostic imaging (like X-rays or MRI) to rule out other conditions.
- Evaluation of your unique body mechanics to understand the underlying causes of pain.
Treatment
At Platinum Health Podiatry, a non-surgical approach is taken to relieve pain and promote healing. Treatment options may include:
- Rest: Cease strenuous activities to allow recovery.
- Ice Therapy: Apply ice packs to the painful area for up to 20 minutes to reduce inflammation.
- Dry Needling: Used to break down adhesions in the muscles.
- Deep Massage: Loosens tight muscles and releases adhesions.
- Foot Mobilization: Helps realign foot bones to decrease stress on the shins.
- Orthotics: Custom insoles prescribed based on any identified biomechanical issues.
